Kingsley and Kingsley Partner to Speak on Wage and Hour Basics

January 21
00:52 2020

Los Angeles, California – Kelsey Szamet, partner at Kingsley and Kingsley Lawyers will address the 2020 Employment Law Conference for the California Lawyers Association in Los Angeles on Feb. 6. Szamet will speak on the topic: “Wage and Hour Basics.”

Szamet has been practicing law since 2008, and has exclusively represented employees and consumers.  She represents workers in employment litigation including complex class actions and individual employment cases. She focuses her practice on wage and hour class action and representative actions including claims for failure to pay wages, the denial of meal and rest periods, failure to pay overtime, and misclassification of workers. She also has a particular area of expertise in bringing claims involving background checks.  She has also successfully represented a number of cases involving sexual harassment, wrongful termination and discrimination.

Wage and hour issues are very close to her heart because they represent injustice of a great magnitude and unethical behavior on the part of companies and corporations.

“Companies shortchange workers on their wages more often than the public realizes,” she says. “For workers, filing a lawsuit on their own can prove lengthy, costly and intimidating. This is where class actions come in.”

Wage violations occur with alarming regularity in California by all accounts. The U.S. Department of Labor states that minimum wage violations in California alone occur about 372,000 times a week. Low-income workers or those who are paid less than $14.35 per hour, make up about a third of California’s workforce and can suffer significant hardship when they are shortchanged by employers.

Szamet has also authored several appellate briefs in both state and federal courts. She has been recognized as a “Rising Star” by Super Lawyers magazine each year since 2014. In addition to her work with Kingsley and Kingsley, she dedicates her time to several nonprofit organizations including the YWCA, an organization that aims to empower women, and the Child Educational Center, a Los Angeles-area nonprofit that provides educational and developmental programs for children and parents.

Szamet received her Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, from the University of California San Diego, where she majored in Human Development and minored in Communications. She received her law degree from UCLA School of Law. While in law school, she was active in the Women’s Law Journal as well as a number of community-based legal clinics serving the marginalized and those in need.

Szamet said in her years of practice in this specialized area, she has observed that when companies engage in such illicit and unethical practices, it’s not just one employee who is affected. Typically hundreds, if not thousands, are impacted by these wrongful actions.

“When workers band together and form a class, they have significantly more firepower to fight such injustices, which should be called out,” she said. “Employers who engage in such unjust practices should be held accountable.”

The California Lawyers Association is a nonprofit that serves as a valuable resource to attorneys who are practicing in the Golden State. The organization delivers programs, network opportunities, events and resources to help lawyers advance professionally.
