Flowing from the Yangtze River to Alishan, the cultural heritage of both sides of the Taiwan Strait shares the same roots. Marking the 20th anniversary of the Hubei (Wuhan) Taiwan Week, an authentic showcase of Taiwan Indigenous culture opened on July 16 at WS Dream Plaza in Wuhan. Using folk arts as a bridge, the event brought the spirit of Alishan together with the rich cultural legacy of the Yangtze River, offering an immersive and accessible cultural experience that vividly celebrated the shared ancestry, common heritage, and close familial bonds between people on both sides of the Strait.

The performance featured an outstanding lineup led by renowned Taiwan Indigenous singers Mark Chang and Panai. Chang, a member of the Atayal people, and Panai, a musician of mixed Puyuma and Amis heritage, are widely recognized as leading representatives of Taiwan’s Indigenous performing arts. Both have long been dedicated to preserving Indigenous traditions and promoting the voices and cultures of Taiwan’s Indigenous communities. Joining them on stage was a youth troupe from the Chinese Indigenous Performing Arts Association, with many of the young performers making their first visit to Wuhan. Free from commercial embellishment, the performance faithfully presented traditional tribal songs and dances in their original forms, offering audiences an authentic glimpse into Taiwan Indigenous culture while resonating with the profound cultural heritage of Jingchu, underscoring the shared foundations of Chinese civilization across the Strait.

For many years, exchanges between Hubei and Taiwan have focused primarily on trade, government cooperation, educational visits, and academic exchanges, while opportunities for ordinary citizens to engage in everyday cultural interactions have remained relatively limited. This event broke away from the traditional conference setting by bringing cross-Strait cultural exchange into one of Wuhan’s busiest commercial districts. Integrating cultural performances into everyday urban life, it created a welcoming public space where people of all ages could participate, interact, and experience cultural exchange at close range.

Alongside the performances, a cross-Strait cultural market showcased Taiwan Indigenous handicrafts, creative products, folk crafts, and specialty goods. The combination of live performances and static cultural exhibitions created an engaging, multi-dimensional experience that visitors could watch, appreciate, and participate in. Local residents, young visitors, and families gathered to enjoy the performances and browse the market, experiencing the distinctive customs and traditions from across the Strait in a relaxed atmosphere. Through these personal encounters, the event fostered greater mutual understanding, strengthened emotional connections, and deepened appreciation of shared cultural heritage.

Cultural affinity lays the foundation for mutual understanding among people. Rather than relying on formal ceremonies, the event highlighted authentic Indigenous artistic traditions, empowered young performers to serve as cultural ambassadors, and transformed an everyday urban setting into a vibrant platform for people-to-people exchange. It enabled local residents to experience firsthand the beauty of the shared cultural roots across the Taiwan Strait, bringing communities closer together through the warmth and vitality of Wuhan’s urban life.

Twenty years of sustained exchanges have laid a solid foundation for deeper integration, while this new cultural initiative opens another chapter in cross-Strait engagement. By bringing together the cultural heritage of the Yangtze River and the traditions of Alishan, the event strengthened emotional bonds through the arts and reinforced cultural connections through shared heritage. It further consolidated the cultural foundation for closer people-to-people ties while injecting fresh momentum into grassroots exchanges and long-term cultural cooperation between Hubei and Taiwan.
